First time? How to Play

Already picked one for you — change it if you like.

Pick your character

A two-player race. One of you picks a word, the other has to spot it in a pile of scattered words — and every second they spend searching, you are filling your grid with X's.

How to play

Choose → Find → Fill → Switch → Repeat. Fill your grid to take the round; win the rounds to take the match.

  1. Choose

On your turn, pick any item from the scattered pool — a word, a number or a letter. You have 30 seconds.

  2. Find

Your opponent has to spot that exact item among all the others and tap it.

  3. Fill

While they search, you tap cells on your own grid. Every tap fills one X.

  4. Switch

The moment they find it, your fill window closes and the roles swap.

It is not a normal word search

Most word search games hand you a block of letters and ask you to trace lines through it. Word Search Battle does something else. The play field is a scatter of complete words — planet, rocket, castle, forty of them at a time, tilted and spread out like stickers on a locker door.

On your turn you pick one of those words and it is sent to your opponent. Their only job is to find it and tap it. Your only job is to fill in as many squares of your own grid as you can before they do. Then you swap. Whoever completes their grid first wins the match.

  • Two players, one shared pool of words, two separate grids.
  • Three modes: Words, Numbers or Letters. Pools of 30, 40 or 50.
  • Grids of 4×4, 4×6 or 4×8. Matches of 1 round, best of 3 or best of 5.
  • Works on a phone, a tablet or a desktop browser — no download, no account.
  • Play a friend through a private room link, or practise against the bot.

The full rules take about two minutes to read, and there is more on how two people share one pool and what happens when you play a stranger.

Common questions

What is Word Search Battle?
A free two-player word game you play in a browser. One player picks a word from a pool of scattered words; the other has to spot that exact word and tap it. While they search, the player who picked is filling in their own private grid. Fill your grid first and you win.
How do you play Word Search Battle?
On your turn you pick a word and it is sent to your opponent. They hunt for it in the pool while you tap cells on your grid — every second they spend searching is a second you are gaining. When they find it, roles swap. Whoever completes their grid first takes the round.
Is Word Search Battle free?
Yes. There is no account, no download, no paid tier and no ads. Type a nickname and play.
Can I play with a friend?
Yes. Choose Play with a Friend, create a room, and send them the six-character code or the link. You can also put two people on one phone or tablet with Two on this device.
Can I play against a random player?
Yes. Play Online puts you in a queue and pairs you with the next real person who joins. There is no room to create and no code to share — and nobody is simulated, so if it is quiet you wait until someone arrives.
Is there a bot mode?
Yes. Play vs Bot is a full match against the computer, at easy, normal or hard. It runs entirely in your browser, so it works with no connection at all.
Can I play on mobile?
Yes — it is built for a phone first. Everything is tap-sized, there is nothing to drag, and it works the same in mobile Safari and Chrome. No app to install.
What are the Words, Numbers and Letters modes?
They change what fills the pool. Words uses ordinary words, Numbers uses two- and three-digit numbers, and Letters uses single letters, which repeat — so in Letters you are matching what the target looks like, not hunting a unique item. The rules are identical in all three.
How does the X-grid work?
Each player has their own small board — 4×4, 4×6 or 4×8. One tap turns an empty cell into an X, and cells never come back off. You can only fill it during the window in which your opponent is searching for the word you chose, which is what turns the game into a race.
How does the winner get decided?
Filling every cell of your grid wins the round. A match is one round, best of three or best of five, and the first player to take enough rounds wins the match. The server decides all of it — scores are never calculated in your browser.
